Pet travel tips to remember

Pets can find moving home incredibly stressful. Here are some ways, both traditional and alternative, to keep things calm for your pet.

Moving house is one of the most stressful experiences of our lives and if it’s hard work for us humans, try to imagine the confusion that it brings for our animals. There’s excellent advice to be found in the below article but what else can you try?

Moving house with your pet

Buttering up your cat

Traditional wisdom always suggests that if you’re moving house with a cat, then the best thing to calm it down is to put butter on its paws! Sounds crazy? Not really! Cats adore butter, so instead of panicking when they arrive somewhere new, they’ll slowly clean their paws, enjoying the treat and once finished, should feel calm and happy in their new surroundings.

Doggy scent

You could also try the pheromone approach! D.A.P (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) mimics the natural smell that a new doggy mum gives off to her puppies which gives them a feeling of reassurance and wellbeing. As humans we can’t smell it, but a simple plug-in diffuser near your pooch’s new bed could work wonders. Ask your vet for advice.

Alternative methods for pets

To keep them extra safe always ensure pets are tagged and microchipped. There are many alternative remedies for animals that can simply be added to their water bowl. Walnut Bach Flower Remedy is said to be beneficial for those facing transition and change and especially good for animals experiencing a new environment.

With all the stress that a house move brings, don’t add to it by worrying about your pet’s health, make sure you’re covered with Pet insurance from Direct Line.
